Nutrition & Young People
Many teenagers between the ages of 14 and 18 years old exhibit the following:
- Fruit intake is poor. Many students eat fruit less than once per day
- Fewer participate in regular physical activity
- A large percentage of teenagers eat a high fat or a high sugar food as a snack at least once per day
Because Mentoring Works would like to address the nutritional needs of it’s participants by teaching them how to eat healthy, exercise and prepare healthy, affordable food for life. Topics covered in the nutrition section will include a look at healthy eating for teens and personal diet plan. The role of food and nutrition in the their personal growth and development which directly effect the achievement of a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Communication Skills
Because Mentoring Works teaches young people how to successfully get their message across, and convey their thoughts and ideas effectively. The purpose of communication is to get your message across to others. This is a process that involves both the sender of the message and the receiver. The process often includes error. Sometimes the sender and the receiver don’t hear the same thing. In fact, a message is successful only when both the sender and the receiver perceive it in the same way.
Public Speaking
Because Mentoring Works teaches young people how to successfully get their message across, and convey their thoughts and ideas effectively by training students in basic public speaking tips. Note the following:
- Keep the message clear
- Be prepared
- Keep the message simple
- Be vivid when delivering the message
- Be natural
- Keep the message concise
Interview Skills
Because Mentoring Works will assist young people in developing techniques for successful interviews. Includes the following:
- How to dress for an interview
- How to express yourself effectively
- How to accentuate your attributes and minimize your shortcomings
- How to GET the JOB!
Decision Making
Because Mentoring Works will assist young people in developing positive decision-making skills. We emphasize the following message:
- A good or bad decision can last a lifetime

Anger Management
Because Mentoring Works will assist young people in developing interpersonal skills needed to manage anger and express anger in appropriate ways. We explore positive ways to handle conflict and discover, through role-play the consequences of out of place anger.
Financial Management
Because Mentoring Works will assist young people in developing the skill of managing financial resources. We will help young people learn about saving, investing and appropriate use of credit cards. Youngsters will develop a mock portfolio to use a guide in developing personal, financial stability.
Value Clarification
Because Mentoring Works will assist young people in developing a true sense of value, based on the rules set by his/her families and the importance of standing firm on one’s religous beliefs, family values, traditions and customs. “IF YOU DON’T STAND FOR SOMETHING, YOU’LL FALL FOR ANYTHING”
Conflict Resolution
Conflict is common in everyone’s life. It can break progressive partnerships, long standing relationships, opportunities to advance and dissolve successful companies. Mentoring Works helps students define problems related to conflict issues, assess how it affects them, and develop strategies to prevent future conflict. We assist students in developing conflict resolution strategies that can be used in school, at home and in their communities. As they become role models in this area, they teach those strategies to others.
